Five ways to prep your skin for the party season
Well the season to be merry is rapidly approaching us – who else is getting ridiculously over excited about all of the Christmas make up and skincare limited editions in Mecca and Sephora – and no doubt your diary is overflowing with office parties, drinks with the girls and a whole lot of festive frivolities?!
So it’s time to plan your outfits – and if you’re like us, think about which make up looks will go with them – but before you worry about which smokey eye and lip combo you’re going to pair with that cute little dress you spied in DJ's, it’s time to get back to basics and focus on your skin, as it’s about to take a hammering!
But have no fear, with a bit of preparation and TLC, you can get your skin in tip top condition so that you rock your party looks. Here’s what you have to do:
You should ideally start prepping your skin now. If you’re not already in the groove, do your skincare routine religiously morning and night. Now is not the time to be slack, skipping steps, and even worse, sleeping with your mascara and foundation smeared all over the pillow. And your secret weapon here is regular exfoliation; whether you prefer a more traditional, scrubby formula or a chemical exfoliating toner (think Clarin’s Gentle Exfoliator Brightening toner), these are a necessity to brighten, smooth and balance your skin, helping to prevent the build-up of pore-clogging debris, and to encourage cellular renewal and soft, healthy looking skin.
Now is also the time to incorporate a treatment or serum, to really target any particular areas of concern. Serum is often the overlooked skincare step, but a good one can take your skin from good to great and is really worth investing in. You can plump for a good all rounder such as Double Serum from Clarins or the cult classic Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II from Estee Lauder or opt for a targeted treatment; Aspect Pigment Punch for Hyperpigmentation; the more wallet friendly Hyaluronic Acid 2% from The Ordinary or IndeedLabs’ Hydraluronserum for dry skin to give you that moisture boost; Ole Henrikson’s Truth Serum Collagen booster with its potent vitamin C formula to brighten and smooth and to help you get your glow on!
And don’t forget the power of a mask. Who needs a professional facial these days when there are so many accessible products which give comparable results and that’s just what you need in the lead up to the party season. Charlotte Tilbury’s Goddess-Skin Clay Mask or her Revolutionary Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Masks are both fabulous as are the GLAMGLOW and Origins ranges.
It’s also a good idea to think about the venues that you’re going to find yourself in and prepare accordingly. Work drinks at a rooftop bar? Invest in a good SPF to go under your make-up otherwise you’ll be in a world of pain and let’s be honest, pink blotchy skin and sunstroke are not a good look! Mecca Cosmetica’s To SaveFace SPF 30+ is a great option as it’s formulated specifically for the face so is lightweight, non- greasy and sits beautifully under makeup.
And on the day, don’t forget to prime. In the southern hemisphere - where our Christmas parties take place when summer is in full swing - it’s hot and sticky and your make up doesn’t stand a chance if you don’t give it something to grip on to. Prime according to your skincare type and needs; some good options are Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer and Benefit’s POREfessional for oiler skin, Too Faced Hangover Primer for a smooth, brightened, more hydrating finish or Becca’s much hyped Backlight and First Light Priming Filters to give more radiance and fresh, awakened skin respectively.
And to lock your make up in – a skincare sandwich if you will - invest in a setting spray to keep everything in place and to stop your make up sliding down your face as you hit the dance-floor. Urban Decay’s All Nighter Long Lasting Make-up Setting Spray is a firm favourite and a great option. It even comes in a 30ml travel sized bottle at Mecca so you can throw it in your clutch to lock in any make up touch ups throughout the night.
So you’re party perfect and our work here is done. Well nearly. So that you don’t undo all your hard work in one fail swoop and look like a shrivelled prune the morning after, don’t forget to drink lots of water. Boring I know -and who wouldn’t prefer a glass of bubbles - but throw in a few cheeky waters and that will help enormously. Dehydrated skin is not the most attractive, and make-up will never sit well on it the next day when you’ll be looking to do it all over again!
