We’re all skincare and beauty junkies here at Abundant Natural Health and love this time of year as the glossy mags and our favourite beauty bloggers, Instagrammers and YouTubers are all talking about the same thing - their favourite products of the year - and who doesn’t love reading and listening about the best of the best and having a virtual snoop in their make up bags and bathroom cabinets?!
So we couldn’t resist jumping on the bandwagon this year and have put Shanan Birkin, our gorgeous CEO, in the hot seat to find out what she’s been loving in 2017.
This is an interesting one as I’ve always had a less is more philosophy and – don’t shout – but I’ve always found that Dove Beauty Bar and water does the trick with my skin. Saying that though, I’ve found that since I’ve got a little older it’s not been quite as effective. I’m in the fortunate position that I work with the best scientists and active ingredients in the skincare business so I’d like to see what we can do about that and how we can innovate and take cleansing to the next level. Watch
I can’t believe that you even need to ask..our Daily Face Cream as it’s such a light, quickly absorbed cream that keeps my skin moisturised all day long. It sits beautifully under make up so that I can still look polished after a busy day of meetings in air-conditioned offices.
As you know I’m all about simplicity and natural ingredients so use Sukin’s Rose Hip Oil a few times a week. It’s fairly basic but has typically done the job. Saying that I haven’t been reaching for it as much since incorporating our moisturiser into my regime so let’s see if it makes my favourites next year!
Favourite Eye Cream:
I used to use Larissa Bright as I like the natural philosophy behind the brand. Since developing our eye cream (Eyes Alive) though I’ve pushed it to one side and have been going through sample pots of the stuff like nobody’s business as it’s genuinely the only eye cream that I’ve used which has instant results. It’s being launched in January 2018 and I can’t wait to share it with you all.
I’ve got to say that I’m old school with this one as most SPFs make me break out. I’ve used Cancer Council Sport 50+ for as long as I can remember as I’m a really active person - and tend to sweat a lot - so need something to stay put and it does the job.
Bare Minerals BarePRO Performance Wear Powder Foundation. It’s my new favourite after ditching my L’Oreal liquid foundation as I was finding it too runny and with getting a little older wanted something to blur out lines and not gather in slight creases in the face. I’m loving it so far!
My trusty Covergirl liquid concealer. Love it! My absolute favourite!
Favourite Eyeshadow Palette:
I can’t recommend Smashbox’s Full Exposure Eyeshadow Palette enough; it’s just the best neutral palette with a great mix of shimmers and mattes to take you effortlessly from day to night.
I’m a big fan of the Korean brand Clubclio and in particular two shades from their Peripera Velvet Cheek collection: #4 Spring Blooming and #3 Vitality Apricot. They’re cream blushes which I love because they blend in more naturally than a powder blush and add a fresh pop of colour to the face.
Honestly I just don’t use them as I’m as pale as can be and they make me look ridiculous!
No need for powder these days as I’m using Bare Minerals Powder Foundation which keeps any shine
I have very thin lips so I tend to go for balms and glosses. My absolutely fave is L’Oreal Paris in Femme Fatale Mauve Lip Balm and if I’m in the mood for a matte lip I tend to go for L’Oreal Paris’ Pearly Peach Dream. And at the more budget end of town, you can’t go wrong with Designer Brands Mulberry Bush. But before I apply any of those I use our lip balm (Lips Alive) to moisturise and plump my lips and to give a good base for colour. When I designed it I wanted it to be in a convenient tube - rather than a pot - so that I can apply it on the go and know that you’ll love it as much as I do! It’s coming out in January and I’m really proud of it.
So that’s Shanan’s top picks for this year. What are your favourites of 2017, we’d love to know?!
